Barack Obama: Social Media Superstar

With only hours remaining before the polls close, I thought it would be appropriate to give credit to the Barack Obama marketing team for their top-to-bottom social media coverage. We’re not talking about a blog here, but a presence on every major outlet (e.g. Facebook, YouTube, Flickr, Twitter, etc.) and some niche ones as well (e.g. BlackPlanet, Faithbase, AsianAvenue – which I thought was dead by now, etc.)

Since Obama entered the race, I’ve used his presence on Twitter as validation for social media, and the numbers don’t lie. While 116,000 followers pales in comparison to the national population, you have to realize that these are 116,000 net-savvy evangelists who are hanging at the end of every word, ready to disseminate your message to their friends and family through conversations, phone calls, emails, blogs, and other social networks. On Facebook, the numbers are exponentially greater at approximately 2.5 million supporters wearing the Obama badge on their profiles – profiles that may be seen a few, if not dozens of times a day.

The moral of the story: if you ever feel you should dismiss social media – don’t. A few key people watching you can spread your word a long way, and if you’re Obama, maybe win you a campaign. We’ll see tonight.

Edit (05/11/2008): Congratulations, President Obama!
